We have bundled three products together to provide a solution to a common problem affecting customers who need to extend the internet connection from a public hotspot to multiple devices in their caravan, motorhome or boat moored in or near to a marina.

What you get

1 Alfa R36 USB WiFi repeater
Manages both the connection to the public hotspot through the BearExtender and shares this on a local WiFi network and 1 LAN port
2 BearExtender USB WiFi Booster
Specially designed to boost connections to difficult-to-reach WiFi networks
3 pole-mountable YAGI directional antenna
High gain (18dBi) antenna to optimise transmission to and from the remote hotspot

How it works

There is some browser-based configuration required to get your equipment up and running. This can be achieved using a tablet, smart phone or laptop. You will have to experiment with where to point your YAGI antenna for the strongest signal, especially if you're unsure of the physical location of the hotspot (e.g. BT-WiFi) you are targetting. Here are the steps involved:

  1. Connect the antenna and BearExtender together via their RP-SMA connectors
  2. Connect the BearExtender to the Alfa R36 via its USB cable
  3. Attach the short black omni-directional antenna to the Alfa R36. This is for transmission of your local WiFi.
  4. Power up the Alfa R36 - mains 12V DC adapter included
  5. Connect a smart phone, tablet or laptop to the Alfa via WiFi or ethernet
  6. Open on browser to configure your hotspot, default login is admin / admin
  7. Select USB Wireless adapter from the Easy Setup options
  8. Click Site Survey on the System Configuration page, which appears next
  9. Identify the hotspot your want to use from the list on the Site Survey. Systematically adjust the direction of your antenna and click Rescan to which direction correlates with the strongest Signal in the Site Survey
  10. Signal is expressed both as a percentage and dbm units, e.g. 68/100 (-63) is stronger than 37/100 (-75)
  11. When you're happy you have the strongest signal possible, select your target hotspot and click Select
  12. You'll be back on the System Configuration screen - click Next
  13. Now on the Wireless Security and Encryption Settings screen you can configure the settings for your local WiFi network transmitted by the Alfa R36. Give the network a name (SSID Choice) and chose an encryption pass phrase. WPA2-PSK encryption AUTO (TKIP/AES) is recommended and the passkey must be a minimum of 8 characters. This page is a once-only configuration - the Alfa R36 will remember your local settings when you need to target a different hotspot next time.
  14. Click Done and wait about a minute for the Alfa R36 to reboot
  15. If targetting a BT-WiFi or FON public hotspot, the first device to connect to your local WiFi needs to load any webpage in a browser to trigger the BT-WiFi-FON login page. Once authenticated all devices on your local network will have access to your shared internet connection.
